The Suppliers Fair scheduled on Wednesday 11th March has been cancelled. This is because last Friday we received the disappointing news that due to a very significant funding shortfall nationally, Learning and Skills Council are reviewing the priority attached to all college new builds (we are among 144 colleges across the UK with plans in place). Following the overwhelming success of the School Liaison team visit to Brighouse High earlier this month a taster day was arranged for the school students. Approximately thirty young learners took part in vocational classes which included Electrical Installation, Hair and Beauty, and Health and Social Care. The pupils were also treated to a special drama performance by current Performing Arts students highlighting the importance of making the right choice for your own future and not necessarily following the crowd.Brighouse High Taster Day – full story
One of the College's Young Enterprise teams, Special Touch Accessories has won the national skills@work competition. The challenge involved the learners demonstrating their business acumen and putting their classroom teachings into practice when asked to submit a fully comprehensive business plan. The team was professional in their approach to the research, problem solving and mathematical calculations. As a result of this triumph Special Touch Accessories have earned an all expenses paid trip to Bulgaria, 11th-13th March, to take part in the international competition. Nigel Aldridge and Dan Hartley, Level 2 Bricklayers with the College were two of eight selected students throughout Yorkshire to win places at a one off master class. The session was presided over by Terry Coles, previous winner of the ‘Young Bricklayer of the Year’ and representative of the UK in the World Skills competition 2007. The learners who have willingly given up their free time to take part in this event received certificates from Helen France, Director of Apprenticeships at the LSC. Both Nigel and Dan are now preparing for two prestigious competitions; Guild of Bricklayers, to be held in April and Skillbuild, in July.Bricklayers Masterclass – full story
