All learners are automatically members of Calderdale College Student Union unless they choose to opt out. If you would like to opt out you must inform the Student Life Team of your decision within four weeks of the start of your course.

The Union is affiliated to the National Union of Students. This entitles all Union members to obtain a Student Union card, which provides discounts on a national and local basis. To get your NUS card you need to take a passport sized photograph and your College ID card to the Student One Centre, A floor, Percival Whitley Building. The Student Union is run on a day-to-day basis by its executive, which is made up of students elected topositions such as President, Vice President and Finance. The executive makes representation to the College management about issues that affect students. The Union works closely with the Student Life team to ensure that services are provided for all of its members. Elections have taken place for President, Vice President and FinanceOfficer for 2006/2007 but further elections will take place at the Union's first Student Council meeting. Other positions include equal opportunities, entertainments,women, and education officers.

Student Council

The Student Council is the governing body of the Student Union and is made up of elected course representatives. The council meets twice a term and discusses issues to do with services provided by the College as well as deciding policies of the Student Union. The Council also has responsibility for electing student representatives on to other College committees such as the Academic Board.

Course Representatives

Course representatives play an important role in increasing communication and feedback between students, course tutors and College management. The duties of a course representative are to:

Represent the views and concerns of students on a particular course

Be involved in the management of their course through attending programme area meetings

Disseminate information to course colleagues

Attend and play a part in the Student Council

Attend faculty meetings

If you are interested in being elected as a course representative, ask your tutor, personal tutor or pick a leaflet up from Advice and Guidance or the Student Life Centre.

Clubs and Societies

Any member of the Student Union can apply to establish a club or society, which could receive financial or other support from the Union. The College will welcome anyone who wants to start a club, as long as the group follows the guidelines laid down in the Student Union constitution. All you have to do is present your idea with a written proposal with the signatures of at least 10 students who support your application.
