Access to HE Social Work ONLINE
This Access course prepares you for entry to university to study for a degree in Social Work. Social Workers support many service users in society including working with families and the elderly, individuals with learning difficulties, supporting care leavers, working with individuals with mental health conditions.
Course Info
The Access to HE Diploma is equivalent to studying three A Levels and supports students in developing the academic knowledge and skills required to begin their journey in to Higher Education. It is important to note that an Access to HE Diploma is a challenging and intense course and students need to be highly motivated, dedicated and have a positive attitude to learning in order to succeed. You will also develop skills in group work as well as independent working skills.
Whilst studying the Access to HE Diploma (Social Work) you will complete units in the following modules:
- Social Policy
- Psychology
- Sociology
In addition to these subject specific modules, the course includes developmental units to support you in developing your academic skills in preparation for university.
When applying to university, we will support you with completing your UCAS application, personal statement and we will provide you with an academic reference. It is important to note that successfully completing your Access to HE Diploma does not guarantee you a place at university. While most universities accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas, it is your own responsibility to check that your UCAS application meets the current entry requirements for your university course choices.
- You will be provided access to MS Office 365. You can download this to your own PC or device for free.
- Throughout the course we will use a number of platforms including MS Office 365, Teams, Moodle, Pro Portal and Turnitin.
- You will require a laptop, PC or tablet and access to Wifi at home.
- We offer intensive support with university applications during the first 6 weeks of the course.
This course provides you with a platform to progress to higher education upon achieving an overall pass and meeting the entry requirements and conditions of your prospective HE provider.
You will develop a wide range of skills, knowledge and abilities to support your transition into a degree. The learning and assessment will stretch you to develop the basis for starting a degree programme including academic writing, referencing, critical and evaluative thinking and reflective skills. You will also develop skills in group work as well as independent working skills.
This Access course is particularly suitable for people who are considering a career in the fields of Social Care, Social Services, Social Sciences or Teaching. Other areas such as Community Studies, Counselling, Education Welfare, Youth Offending and Probation Service degrees are a good route also.

As the course is at Level 3 a high level of commitment is essential.
In addition to your work at college you will be required to undertake independent study and research for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Course leader: Bally Kaur, BSc (Hons), has been teaching for nearly a decade on Access to HE. She graduated in 2010 with a BSc in Psychology and Health Studies from the University of Huddersfield and completed her PGCE soon after. Since then she been successfully leading the University Centre’s Access to HE Social Sciences course, and is an established member of the University Centre team, with an impressive track record of supporting students to progress to
degree courses. Her previous work has included working as an interpreter alongside the West Yorkshire Police and volunteering at the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
Entry Requirements & Interview Process
You are recommended to have GCSE Maths Grade C/4 and GCSE English Language at Grade C/4 or above or a Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent. However, you may undertake GCSE study alongside the Access to HE Diploma.
If you wish to study Teaching, you must have GCSEs in English, Science and Maths at Grade C/4 and above at point of entry.
