Course Overview

This course will provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills essential to anybody interested in pursuing a career in the health or social care industries

This course is designed to offer learners a more specialised pathway to progress into the Healthcare industry through either Higher Education or directly into the workplace.

Learning occurs through the completion of projected and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

This course provides much of the underpinning knowledge for National Occupational Standards, is equivalent to 3 A Levels and enables progression to employment or university.

During the first year of the qualification all students will have to complete the following units that are assessed internally by the college:

  • Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Human Growth and Development
  • Safeguarding in Health and Social Care
  • Communication in Health and Social Care
  • Infection Prevention and Control in Health and Social Care
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Research Skills for Health and Social Care
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Reflective Practice

Students will be encouraged to progress to the second year of the qualification to achieve the full CACHE Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. A further five mandatory units will be completed, four of which are assessed internally by the college:

  • Empowerment in Health and Social Care
  • Protection of Children, Young People and Adults in Health and Social Care
  • Research Skills for Health & Social Care
  • Personal and Professional Development

The final mandatory unit will be taken under exam conditions and assessed and graded externally by CACHE.

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care

In order to fully achieve the qualification you must have a minimum of 175 hours in a supported work placement.

The course includes a placement for which all students will need to have a DBS enhanced disclosure. The College will apply and pay for the DBS check.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

This course is suitable for 16-18 year olds. You will need 5 GCSE’s at grade C or grade 4 or above, these must include English Language. An appropriate GCSE English Language qualification along with a full existing Level 2 Diploma in HSC will be considered on an individual basis.

GCSE Science is strongly advised, although some learners will be able to study GCSE Science alongside the qualification as part of their Study Programme.

The course includes a placement and all students will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. The College will apply and pay for this.

Progression

Progression can include degrees in Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Paramedic, Health and Community Studies, Health Studies, Occupational Therapy, Radiotherapy, Support Rehabilitation, Operating Department Technician.

Progression can also include careers in Palliative Care or various roles within the NHS.

Assessment Methods

Assessment occurs via a wide range of activities including written work, individual and group presentations, practical observations, Pod Casts and Tests.

There is a Controlled Assessment that is competed within the college under exam conditions and then assessed and graded externally by CACHE.

Each student will also complete a minimum of 100 hours in a work placement setting.
