Incentive Payments for
Hiring an Apprentice
The government is offering incentive payments for businesses hiring new apprentices between the 1st August 2020 and 31st March 2021.
Hiring apprentices before 1st April 2021
For new apprentices who joined your organisation between 1st August 2020 – 31st March 2021 aged:
- 16 – 18, employers will receive £3,000
- 19 – 24, employers will receive £2,000
- 25+, employers will receive £1,500
You must apply for this incentive before 31st May 2021.
Hiring apprentices from 1st April 2021
For new apprentices who join your organisation between 1st April – 30th September 2021 employers will be able to claim £4,000 for any new apprentice aged between 16 – 18, and £3,000 for all other age groups.
You can apply for this incentive from 1st June 2021.
You can only apply for new apprentices who joined your organisation between 1st August 2020 and 30th September 2021.
You cannot apply for an existing employee who joined your organisation before 1st August 2020, even if they started an apprenticeship after this date.

Employers can begin to apply for incentive payments for apprentices hired between the 1st August and 31st March, from the 1st of September 2020. The claim for the payment needs to be made through the Digital Apprenticeship Service account.
