Course Overview

This Foundation Degree in Counselling & Applied Psychology forms the first two years of our full three-year degree programme, combining academic study with practical experience to prepare you for careers in helping professions. You’ll develop a strong grounding in counselling theory, psychological principles, ethics and professional practice, alongside hands-on skills through workshops and real-world learning.

After a shared first year, you’ll specialise in one of two pathways. The Counselling pathway prepares you for placement experience and progression towards professional registration with organisations such as British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or British Psychological Society (BPS).

Placement opportunities are supported through the College’s extensive local network of services. The Psychology pathway offers a broader focus, supporting careers in areas such as criminal justice, forensic psychology, education and mental health. Successful completion allows progression to the final year to achieve a full BSc (Hons) Level 6, top-up degree.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

48–64 UCAS points from relevant Level 3 qualifications (A Levels, BTEC or equivalent). GCSE English Language at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) is required. Relevant work or voluntary experience in a helping or support role is desirable. Mature students with appropriate experience are encouraged to apply.

Applicants will be invited to a supportive interview lasting approximately 45–60 minutes. Interviews are preferably held face to face, with alternative arrangements available if required. The discussion will explore relevant experience, motivation for the course, and readiness for reflective and self-aware learning, including awareness of personal values and perspectives.

Progression

On successful completion, students can progress to further higher education study or training within psychology, counselling or related fields. From September 2026, students may progress onto the Level 6 BSc (Hons) Counselling & Applied Psychology top-up degree, with pathways in Psychology or Counselling, enabling completion of a full undergraduate degree.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through a combination of written essays and reports, case studies, presentations, role plays and simulated practice, reflective portfolios, and research-based assignments. These varied assessment methods are designed to assess both academic understanding and applied skills.

£7950 per year
