Course Overview

The BSc (Hons) Counselling & Applied Psychology Top-Up (Level 6) is the final year of the honours degree, enabling students who have completed an appropriate Foundation Degree (Level 5) to progress to a full BSc (Hons) qualification.

This top-up year deepens academic understanding and professional skills in counselling and psychology, focusing on advanced theory, research, ethical practice and applied interventions. Students further refine their specialist focus through pathway options in Counselling and Psychology, completing a major independent project/dissertation alongside advanced modules that support professional identity, critical analysis and reflective practice.

Placement opportunities are available through the College’s extensive network of local services. Graduates are equipped for careers in helping professions, further postgraduate study, or progression to professional training and external registration with bodies such as BACP and BPS.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

Completion of a relevant Foundation Degree (e.g., Counselling & Applied Psychology or equivalent Level 5 qualification with required grades). GCSE English Language at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent). Applicants must demonstrate readiness for Level 6 independent study and professional practice.

Applicants attend an informal interview to discuss their interest in either counselling or applied psychology, suitability for working with vulnerable individuals and any relevant experience.

Progression

Graduates may pursue postgraduate study (e.g., MSc psychology, counselling qualifications), professional training routes required for external registration with bodies such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or British Psychological Society (BPS), or apply for specialised roles in health, social care, education and community settings.

Assessment Methods

Assessment combines a major dissertation/independent research project, case studies, essays, presentations, reflective portfolios, placements evaluations and pathway-specific assignments. There are no formal timed written exams.
