Course Overview

The Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production is a practical and creative course designed for aspiring musicians, performers, and producers who want to develop the skills needed for today’s music industry. The programme combines live performance training with modern music production, allowing students to explore their musical identity while gaining experience in both studio and stage environments.

Learners will develop their skills, learn to record and produce music using industry-standard software and equipment, and collaborate with other musicians on creative projects in partnership with The Piece Hall, in Halifax.

The course emphasises hands-on learning through rehearsals, recording sessions, and live performances, helping students build confidence and real-world experience. Learners will have a strong portfolio of work and the skills needed to progress to higher education, apprenticeships, or careers in music performance, production, and related creative industries.

During this course, you will learn a range of modules including:

  • Principles of Music Performance and Production – Introduction to core skills in performing, recording, and producing music
  • Critical Listening and Music Composition – Developing analytical listening skills and creating original music.
  • Music Industry and Professional Practice – Understanding how the music industry works, including promotion, careers, and professional conduct
  • Critical and Contextual Awareness – Exploring music styles, genres, and cultural influences that shape contemporary music.
  • Music Production in Context – Learning studio recording, mixing, and digital audio workstation (DAW) techniques
  • Music Performance in Context – Developing stagecraft, rehearsal techniques, and live performance skills
  • Preparation for Specialist Study – Building a portfolio and refining skills in a chosen area such as performance, production, or songwriting
  • Collaborative Music Project – Working with other musicians and producers to plan, rehearse, record, and perform a final project in partnership with The Piece Hall, Halifax.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

This course is fully funded for individuals who either:

  • Don’t already hold a level 3 qualification
  • Hold a level 3 qualification but are unemployed
  • Hold a level 3 qualification, are employed or self-employed but earn less than £25,750 per annum

Participants must be 19 years old or older as of 31st August 2025 and must reside in West Yorkshire.

Progression

After completing this course, you may progress into higher education, an apprenticeship or into employment.
