Course Overview

Studying applied science is a great choice for many reasons. Employers are increasingly looking for well-qualified people to work in the STEM sector. The skills you acquire when studying applied science are useful in a range of careers. Job opportunities include forensic scientist, drug researcher, medical physics technician, environmental technician and data analyst.

This is a one year course that gives you hands-on practical experience in a range of science techniques. Aspects of this course will include building circuits, sustainable development, pollution indicators, reactions of acid and variation and evolution.

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Application of Science is taught over 120 guided learning hours (GLH). It has four mandatory units. Learners must complete all mandatory units.

The mandatory units include:

  • Principles of science (this topic covers the principles of biology, chemistry and physics, and is externally assessed)
  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Physics and our Universe
  • Biology and our Earth

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

School leavers will need 4 GCSEs at Grade 1 or above or equivalent. Applicants will be interviewed and will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and good communication skills.

If your application is successful, you will have an interview with a specialist tutor.

Progression

Successful completion of this course could help you progress to the T Level Health course, a good opportunity to gain knowledge and skills useful in further education or employment.

Assessment Methods

Students will be assessed through a variation of written assignments, an exam, presentations, posters and practicals.
