To kick off T Levels Week, we caught up with Dillon to find out more about his experience of studying a T Level in Health at Calderdale College.
It was an opportunity to learn about what he’s studying as part of his course and find out more about the experience he’s getting whilst on placement with New Choices, a community-centred care provider based in Bradford.
What do you study?
“I’m doing T Level Health and I’m also on placement with New Choices in Bradford.”
What do New Choices do?
“It’s for people that are unable to look after themselves. They can be in wheelchairs, they can have extensive learning disabilities. There’s loads of different centres and we support people to travel and get out on trips.”
What are you doing when you’re there?
“At the moment I’m training so I’m shadowing the team, learning to do the job, how to support someone in a wheelchair, preparing meals and the practical stuff like risk assessments.”
How are you finding it?
“It’s difficult, but it’s good!”
What are you learning when you’re in College?
“At the start we did a lot of theory, last year we studied anatomy and physiology as well as person centred care. We also do practical work, it’s good that we have the mock ward to be able to do that.”
What other skills have you gained?
“We cover more than just health, we also have to develop our English work. We learn how to structure essays and how to write for exams. To go into this kind of work we’re going to need those skills too.”
What’s it like going out on placement but also studying at College?
“It’s really beneficial to be able to gain experience on placement but also have the facilities at College. Our practical work is reviewed every month and contributes to our final exams.”
Why did you pick a T Level over anything else?
“It’s just what caught my eye, because I want to be a paramedic I did a load of research. I asked AI ‘can you find me good courses in my area for paramedic science so I can progress?’
“It suggested a T Level in Health, so I started looking for somewhere that offered that locally. Because I knew what I wanted to do, I chose this course to get the job that I want.”
What else has College helped with?
“Originally, I didn’t get my science qualification so I was put onto Level 2, but after I started studying my tutor Stacy thought it would be right to put me forward for the Level 3 qualification. That’s made a huge difference, it’s nice to get the support you need.”
