Calderdale College’s Brickwork Apprentice, Joe Ellis, receives the Guild of Bricklayers New Entrant award, after competing with students from 13 different colleges in Yorkshire.

The Guild of Bricklayers Regional Heats Competition was held at Doncaster College on Friday 25th May. The event brought together the most talented bricklayers from across the region, who went head to head competing in a number of categories, with an aim to win the highly coveted awards.

Each year students with the finest bricklaying skills are invited to this high profile competition, to showcase their talent and to try qualify to the finals of the competition which will take place at Brooklands College in June.

Joe Ellis, comments on his experience at the competition:

“The competition was a great experience, and I won some really good tools from quality brands that sponsored the competition. Although I found the competition challenging, I was well prepared from the experiences I have had on site and at college.”

It was good to meet up with other highly skilled brick students from a number of different colleges and this makes me feel even more proud that out of all the entrants I was chosen as the winner! I’m really looking forward to the next stage of the competition.”
