From Kuwait to Calderdale – how college has changed Dilan’s life

Higher National Certificate (HNC) Sport student Dilan has experienced lots of culture (and different colleges).

Since arriving at Calderdale College, his attitude, self-confidence and mental health has improved tenfold.

After living overseas in Kuwait for many years, Dilan was worried about how he would adjust to life back in the UK. He studied at a different college before transferring to Calderdale College where he joined our Basketball Academy, training and playing regularly for the Bradford Dragons.

Dilan says: “The Academy and College have helped me a lot. I was previously at a different college which only allowed me to focus on basketball and this meant my grades weren’t good.

“Being at Calderdale College helps to keep me in a routine with lessons and training. I feel like I’m constantly improving both in basketball and in lessons.”

Dilan is now close to completing his Level 4 HNC qualification in Sport, and he was a driving force in the Bradford Dragons Academy team who were crowned winners of their division in April!

Dilan adds: “The Academy team has grown a lot and we continue push each other to be better.

“College has really helped me build up my self-confidence and social skills after moving back to the UK. Before I was at a time where I was down on myself a lot but the more I kept coming to college the more I felt better about being me.”
