Celebrating student success at the West Yorkshire Adult Learner Awards

We are delighted to celebrate two of our students who were nominated for achievements at the West Yorkshire Adult Learning Awards!

The event, held at Leeds Civic Hall on 24 June 2024, celebrated the transformational adult skills provision across West Yorkshire, recognising all levels of learning and achievements amongst 19+ learners across the region. Eight prestigious awards were up for grabs that championed excellence in adult education.

Our Student Nominees / Winners:

Valentyna Hmyria – Winner of the English Language Learner Award

Scooping the English Language Learner Award, Valentyna recently completed her English Skills as a Second Language (ESOL) course at Calderdale College, where she engaged in our ESOL study programme to help improve her English Language skills as well as her academic and employment prospects post study.

Valentyna was recognised for her outstanding improvement and determination in learning the English Language.

Martha Arratoonian – Runner up for the Learning for Work Award  

Martha, a former student at Northern College completed a Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) at Calderdale College this year, the initiative involved a partnership between Calderdale College, Northern College and Job Centre Plus. Exceeding in her SWAP, she has now secured a permanent role working at Calderdale College!

Martha said: “It is a fantastic feeling to be a runner up for the Learning for Work Award at the West Yorkshire Adult Learning Awards!”.

The category is aimed at learners who have used adult skills courses to support them to enter or progress within employment.

Celebrating success

Jackie Stirling, Head of Faculty for Adult and General Education said: “We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of Valentyna and Martha, being recognised at the awards is an outstanding accomplishment for our adult learners who have invested in their future through hard work during their studies at Calderdale College.”
