Bricklaying – Level 2 Apprenticeship

Study Area: Apprenticeships
Duration: 24 months
Attendance: Part Time

Course Overview

A career in the construction industry is like no other. Bricklaying is a core function within the construction sector, particularly the house building sector. The Government has a target to build significantly more new homes over the coming years and therefore the demand for bricklayers has never been higher.

Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures e.g. chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations.

To be able to start a bricklaying apprenticeship, you need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week and attend College one day a week.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will learn how to complete basic bricklaying tasks and work with a variety of materials. Your day-to-day work will include measuring work areas and setting out the first courses of bricks/blocks and corners. You will check they are straight using a spirit level and line. You will also learn how to mix mortar and understand quantities, plus the importance of Health & Safety on site.
