The Engineering Maintenance Technician (Dual Discipline) Level 3 Apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to begin or advance a career in engineering maintenance. This apprenticeship is designed for those working in engineering, manufacturing, production, or maintenance environments, developing the practical skills and technical knowledge required to maintain and improve complex engineering systems and equipment.

As an Engineering Maintenance Technician (Dual Discipline), you will gain valuable hands-on experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. You will work alongside experienced engineers and maintenance professionals, developing the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to diagnose faults, carry out maintenance activities, and support the reliability and efficiency of engineering operations.

You will learn to:

Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance activities on engineering equipment and systems
Diagnose faults using a range of engineering principles, techniques, and diagnostic equipment
Apply mechanical and electrical maintenance skills to support safe and effective operations
Interpret technical drawings, manuals, and engineering documentation accurately
Understand and apply health, safety, environmental, and industry regulations within engineering environments
Use engineering tools, equipment, and technologies to support continuous improvement and operational performance

To enrol, you must be employed in a relevant engineering maintenance role with an employer who will support your learning and development throughout the programme. Apprenticeships are work-based qualifications, so securing a suitable role within the engineering sector is essential before you can begin your training. Alternatively, if you do not yet have an employer, you can apply for a full-time engineering course as a starting point. Should you secure employment during your course, you can be transferred onto the apprenticeship pathway.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

A minimum of GCSE Grade 4 / C or above in English and Maths is preferred. If you do not hold these qualifications, you will be supported to complete Functional Skills as part of your apprenticeship. For learners aged 19 and over, this requirement will be reviewed and agreed in consultation with your employer as part of the enrolment process.

Progression

On successful completion, apprentices can progress onto higher-level engineering apprenticeships (Level 4 or Level 5), advanced maintenance and engineering technician roles, specialist roles in mechanical, electrical, automation, or manufacturing engineering or further qualifications in engineering, leadership, or technical management.

Assessment Methods

The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of classroom-based learning at The Engineering Centre campus in Brighouse, practical training, and workplace visits from your dedicated Training and Development Officer. You will receive ongoing support throughout the programme, with your employer actively involved in progress reviews to ensure you remain on track and develop the skills required for your role.

All apprentices are required to complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to successfully achieve the qualification. The EPA is designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have developed throughout your apprenticeship, including your ability to apply engineering maintenance principles in a real working environment. This is carried out by an independent assessment organisation to ensure fair and consistent standards. Calderdale College will support you in preparing for this final stage to help you achieve success.

Course Fees

Apprenticeship training is fully funded by your employer—either through the Apprenticeship Levy or government co-investment, depending on the size of the organisation. As an apprentice, you will not pay for your training or assessment.
