Course Overview

This professional development qualification provides essential knowledge and skills to anyone wanting to actively support individuals with learning disabilities. Units include: the meaning of learning disability, support, legislation, communication and planning.

This Level 2 NCFE-accredited short course is designed for anyone interested in working with or supporting individuals with learning disabilities across a range of settings. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to key topics in learning disability support.

Through a series of targeted modules, learners will explore:

  • The wider context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities, including historical and current approaches to care, legislation, and rights.
  • An introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions, covering key characteristics, challenges, and support strategies.
  • An understanding of physical disabilities, including how they intersect with learning disabilities and impact daily life.
  • An introductory awareness of models of disability, encouraging learners to think critically about the social and medical models and their implications for support practice.
  • The principles of supporting young people with a disability in their transition to adulthood, focusing on person-centered planning, independence, and preparing for future pathways.

This course is ideal for teaching assistants, support staff, or anyone with a personal or professional interest in learning disability support. On completion, learners will have gained the knowledge and confidence to support individuals in a respectful, informed, and empowering way.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

3 GCSE’s, with at least 3’s in English and Math’s.

All applicants will be invited to an interview.

Applicants without the stated entry requirements may still have their application considered. These will be evaluated on individual merit and interviewing staff may introduce an assessment into the interview process to assess applicants’ current level of ability in relation to the course applied for. Progression

Students can progress onto the level 2 foundation to T-level or depending upon GCSE grades (Mathematics and English) onto the T-level in Education and Childcare.

Assessment Methods

This course will be assessed through coursework for each unit of knowledge.
