Lydia joined Calderdale College at just 14-years-old as part of the Early College Transfer programme. After experiencing bullying during her time at school, Lydia arrived at College lacking confidence, but her education journey quickly transformed.
Reflecting on her experience, Lydia said: “I joined the Early College Transfer course when I was just 14, starting on the Level 1 Beauty course. I managed to progress onto the Level 2 and Level 3 Beauty courses and grew not only my skills but my confidence too. I’m now self employed as a Beautician and I’m so excited to see where my career takes me next.”
During her time at College, Lydia developed strong practical skills, from delivering professional beauty treatments to understanding the day-to-day realities of running a business. Alongside her technical training, she gained valuable insight into what it takes to succeed as a salon owner, helping her build ambition for her future career.
Calderdale College is committed to preparing students for employment by providing real-world experiences. Students benefit from regular visits from successful professionals in the beauty industry who share their journeys, offer expert advice and inspire the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
Lydia added: “Calderdale College is really supportive. The staff genuinely care about helping you succeed and that encouragement made all the difference for me on my course. They were there to answer questions, offer advice and celebrate my achievements. I truly felt encouraged every step of the way.”
The Early College Transfer programme offers home educated young people aged 14-16 the opportunity to study in a different environment to school, while gaining qualifications in English, Maths and a vocational subject of their choice. For students like Lydia, it provides not just an alternative pathway, but a fresh start and the confidence to succeed.
