What is Clearing – and how can it help you find the right course?

Katie Walker – Head of Higher Education at the University Centre Calderdale College.
Let’s be honest – not everything goes to plan. Maybe your exams didn’t go as well as you’d hoped. Maybe the idea of moving miles away doesn’t feel quite right anymore. Or maybe you’ve only just decided that university is actually something you do want to do.
Whatever your situation, Clearing is here to give you another shot. This is a way for you to find the perfect course, and the place, that fits where you’re at right now.
What is Clearing?
Clearing is part of the UCAS university application process – think of it as a “last call” for filling course spaces. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to take control of your future.
You’re eligible for Clearing if you:
- Didn’t receive any offers
- Didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
- Declined your offers
- Applied after 30 June
- Or are applying for the first time
In short, it’s a second chance – and a valuable one too.
When does Clearing happen?
Clearing officially opens from Saturday 5 July until mid-October, but the big rush happens after A Level and BTEC Results Day on Thursday 14 August. This is when universities confirm who’s been accepted, and many spaces free up for new applicants. Top tip? Don’t leave it too late. The earlier you apply, the more choice you’ll have.
