Course Overview

This Level 3 Certificate is designed for individuals who are already working or volunteering in a school setting, or who want to gain a recognised qualification to support teachers and learners within the learning environment.

The programme helps you understand the role, responsibilities and professional standards expected of those who support teaching and learning in schools. You will also develop your knowledge of how children and young people grow and develop, and how to provide effective support in a range of classroom contexts.

To complete the course, you must be working or volunteering in a school or college setting, supporting children and young people’s learning. We recommend a minimum of 100 hours in a real work environment. You must be aged 16+ and able to attend a placement one day per week.

You will build the knowledge and skills needed to work directly with children and young people and in schools or colleges, including:

  • Schools and colleges as organisations
  • Support health and safety in a learning environment
  • Understand how to safeguard children and young people
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Understand how children and young people develop
  • Support positive behaviour in children and young people
  • Support children and young people during learning activities
  • Support English and Maths skills
  • Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Engage in personal and professional development

Start Date

Various Start Dates

  • Mondays – 3 hours per week teaching and 1-to-1 with tutor plus self-guided time
  • Face-to-face delivery at Calderdale College
  • Choose from either a daytime or evening class: 12pm – 3pm or 5pm – 8pm

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

You will need the equivalent of Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills to support children and young people in a school environment.

Applicants will be required to attend a standard interview prior to enrolment.

Progression

Students may progress onto a Higher Level Teaching Assistant Level 4 Certificate, an Early Years Foundation Degree or into employment.

Assessment Methods

All modules will be internally assessed through the production of a portfolio and observation. This will consist of a range of materials which may include some of the following:

  • Evidence you have produced at work
  • Written work such as essays
  • Case studies
  • Witness Testimony
  • Reflective logs or diaries
  • Presentation and/or report
  • Professional Discussion
  • Placement Observation

Course Fees

Tuition fee: £1415

Registration fee: £140

An Advanced Learner Loan is available for this course fee, but the registration fee is payable on enrolment.
