Top local barbers return to their roots at Calderdale College where it all began. Hear from Isaac and Leona who share their top tips for starting a future in barbering…
The College welcomed award-winning talent from The Yorkshire Chair as two top local barbers went back into the classroom to deliver exciting live practical sessions.
Since completing their apprenticeship with Calderdale College, Isaac and Leona both secured jobs as barbers at The Yorkshire Chair in Bradford.
Leona started her apprenticeship with The Yorkshire Chair as her employer and was offered a fantastic opportunity of a full-time role within the team once she completed her apprenticeship.
She said: “I came back to Calderdale College to show the current apprentices a live full barbering demonstration and to talk with them about how far you can go through the apprenticeship scheme.”
With the mullet coming back into fashion, Leona showcased the key stages of cutting the hairstyle and gave her top tips on how to style the cut.
Meanwhile, Isaac worked in a number of salons before joining The Yorkshire Chair in 2021. During this time, he also entered barbering competitions and recently won second place at The Great British Barber Bash in Manchester.
He said: “I was really excited to chat to the students about my experiences, as entering barbering competitions are a great way of getting yourself out there.”
Both Isaac and Leona highlighted the importance of social media to build up a client base and marketing your skills as a barber.
Leona added: “People will see your posts and want to come to your salon, so it’s a great way of promoting yourself to new clients and similar people in the industry.”

Hairdressing tutor at Calderdale College, Debra Powell, added: “It was great to welcome back Isaac and Leona to the College where they first started their studies.
“It was an amazing opportunity for our apprentices to gain a wider insight into what an apprenticeship journey looks like and how far you can come.
“A massive thank you once again to both Isaac and Leona for coming back in to do their demonstrations, which was something new for our apprentices who all really enjoyed it and felt inspired after hearing about their journeys.”
