Electrical Installation Level 1 – Halifax

Study Area: 16-18
Duration: 36 Weeks ‘Enhanced’ (Certificate)
Attendance: Full Time

Course Overview

If you want a rewarding career as a professional electrician then this course will give you the hands-on skills you need to get started. It will introduce the principles behind the most technical and exciting occupation within the construction industries.

At least half of the course will be spent carrying out practical tasks in the workshop that are carefully designed so that you are learning the principals of electrical installation whilst you are working with your hands. You will spend an equal time in the classroom studying the theory.

This means that you will see why the maths and science is important because as your theory skills improve, so will your practical ability.

Remember, that we cannot see, touch, taste, hear or smell electricity so you need to be able to explain how it works and why it behaves in certain ways.

Your understanding of the formulae and theories will make you a better electrician, able to design systems, install them and then inspect, test and commission them. That is where the money is.

We also help you to prepare for your future by giving you more than just electrical skills. We will show you how to run your own business and even let you have a go at it through enterprise projects where you learn how to manage a team and make a profit.

We have employers come into college to talk to you about what they want from an employee and we have past students visit so you can ask questions and find out what it is really like to be working as an electrician.

You will study the following units:

  • Health & Safety
  • Principles of electrical science
  • Electrical installations technology
  • Installation of wiring systems & enclosures
  • How to communicate with others within the building trade

Each unit will include an externally set assessment to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the unit. Students will have to participate in a course suitability test within the first six weeks of the course.

Start Date

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

All applicants will be invited to an interview in the electrical workshop with a course tutor.

Candidates are required to show enthusiasm and commitment to the course. It is desirable to have a minimum grade C/4 for Maths and English GCSE, but if not achieved it will be essential to improve your maths and English skills whilst on this course.

Progression

When you achieve your Level 1 qualification there is a wide range of routes open to you. If you are successful at your progression test at the end of the course, you may be invited to join the L2 electrical diploma course. If you need more time to build up your maths and English, you may be invited to join the L1 electrical diploma course.

This is the first step to becoming a fully qualified electrician. If you find an apprenticeship during your L1 course, we will simply transfer you to the apprenticeship and you will attend our Engineering Centre in Brighouse one day per week and spend four days per week on site. Either way, you will be allowed to develop your skills well beyond L1 if you study here at Calderdale College. You will set your own limits.
