How Calderdale College gave Carl a second chance

Carl left school with good grades and a clear sight of where he wanted his career to go. After working with vulnerable adults in the Care sector for a few years, he felt ready for a change and something new so he could take his career to the next level.

He said: “I ended up in a rut and I didn’t know what to do. I knew I was ready for a career change but I felt like I didn’t know who to turn to for advice.”

As Carl continued to feel unsatisfied with his work life, he reached out to Calderdale College to find out what options might be available to him.

He explains: “When I spoke to the College they were really helpful. I completed a maths and English assessment and discussed my qualifications and experience. I was told I could study a degree! I was so pleased to hear this as  it wasn’t something I thought I’d have the opportunity to do.”

Carl is now in the final year of his Business, Leadership and Management Foundation Degree and feels much more positive about the future.

He added: “Going back into education is really hard, but if you have a can-do attitude and you’re willing to put the work in, it’s definitely achievable.

“The support at Calderdale College has been great. We can speak to our tutors about our assignments, but we also have academic assistants who we can talk to about anything and they will listen and help.

“Once I graduate, I want to work in a business role and get some experience as a manager, but I’d also like to come back to the College and study towards an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) course.”

ILM is an industry-recognised qualification accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management. On this course Carl will learn additional management skills outside the remit of business.
