Katy Jane, BA (Hons) Community, Public Health and Social Care

Katy is studying a BA (Hons) Degree in Community, Public Health and Social Care at University Centre Calderdale College. She hopes to go on to be a teacher, and feels that the course has given her a better understanding of people which will benefit her future aspirations.

What made you choose to come to Calderdale College?

“I started off doing Maths and Computing at Aberdeen University, but I decided to take a complete career turnaround and Calderdale College gave me the opportunity to do so.

“I decided to study this course because I want to help people, and the value of a degree will help me get better job opportunities.

“The course opens a lot of doors in Health and Social Care and gives you a greater understanding of people and the world around.

“The course benefits from great tutor support, and a convenient location in the local area.”

What is your favourite moment from the course?

“I’ve had some great moments at the University Centre, for instance after working hard on a difficult assignment, I then found out that I got an amazing mark and the effort was worth it.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I hope to do teacher training next and go on to be a secondary school maths teacher, and then hopefully move up in a school.

“I feel that although my course isn’t education-specific, it gives you a better understanding of people. It also gives great building blocks to social issues I may face in education such as safeguarding and the importance of empowerment.”
