Lewis Broadbent - Apprentice Plumber, NVQ Level 2 Plumbing and Heating

Lewis is a shining example of how a positive attitude to work and a strong commitment to facing challenges head on can reap rewards in the workplace. His determination and commitment led to him being picked to represent Calderdale College and his employer at the annual HIPs Plumbing and Electrical competition.

He came a close second and was awarded a prize for the high standard of his work - a testament to the quality of training from both the college and his employer.

The Apprenticeship

Lewis began his NVQ Level 2 Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship in September 2017 and will complete it in July 2019, once he’s finished his final theory exams.

He is employed by Brian Slattery Plumbers, Halifax-based plumbing and heating specialists who also provide customers with a range of renewable energy solutions, from solar panels to ground source heat pumps.

As well as his valuable on-the-job training, Lewis attends Calderdale College, where in addition to his plumbing apprenticeship he is improving his maths, English and IT skills.

“I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship and my time at Calderdale College,” said Lewis.

“I’m learning so much while getting paid at the same time. Being at college means I have also had the opportunity to meet lots of different people and learn how to deal with them, which I know will help me in my job in the future.

“I have had great support from my Training Officer, Paul Lively, who often comes to see me at work and he has helped me finish my on-site portfolio. I am also hugely grateful for the on-going support from Brian Slattery Plumbers.”

His training officer at Calderdale College, Paul Lively, said: “Lewis has a positive attitude to work and to learning.  He always puts his head down and gives his all.

“Lewis has been rewarded for his efforts by having the opportunity to represent the college at the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year regional event at Burnley College.  He’s also representing his employers, so they are as thrilled for him as we are.”

Lewis added: “I’ve learnt a huge amount through my employers and also through all the staff at the college. My goal now is to carry on, complete my Level 3 qualifications and become GasSafe registered.”

Apprenticeships and Calderdale College

Calderdale College is a major work-based learning provider, delivering high-quality training programmes in partnership with local and national companies.

The only college in West Yorkshire to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for apprenticeships, the college delivers a range of qualifications, from Intermediate (Level 2) to Higher (Level 5), covering 25 different sectors, including Business, Construction and Digital Marketing.

On an annual basis we train over 500 apprentices and work with over 3,000 local and national employers, ranging from micro-businesses to some of the region’s largest levy-paying companies. We also help them to recruit apprentices to their workforce, matching hundreds of school and college leavers to apprenticeship vacancies.
