Michael’s journey with Calderdale College started in 2014 when he enrolled onto his Entry Level 3 Childcare course.
He is a mature student who had a clear career path he wanted to follow in his mind from the very start.
He commented: “My course has massively helped me understand how to become a good Early Years Practitioner and allowed me to gain the valuable experience of working with children of different ages as well as practitioners already experienced in this field.”
“Thanks to the College I’ve had the opportunity to gain insight into the working environment by learning about working within a nursery or school setting and how the needs of children in both settings differentiate from each other.”
Michael believes that the College has massively helped him build his career. He is currently completing his Early Years placement, which is mandatory to the course, and has provided him with the opportunity to put theory into practice and boost his confidence.
Michael’s tutor Sara Smith said of his progress through the years:
“This journey has seen Michael progress through the levels of Early Years courses gaining more confidence in his ability to reach his career goals, not only through gaining the knowledge and understanding that each level of course has given him, but also through his determination and willingness to want to learn and achieve.”
Michael has received the CACHE Student of the Year Award, which he said was his favorite moment during his time at the College. He said: “It was one of those proud moments and it was amazing to feel that my College was also proud of me, and recognised me for my hard work.”
Sara adds: “Michael is an inspiration and this award is a recognition for all the years of hard work and commitment he has given.”
Michael is currently in his final months of the Level 3 Technical Diploma in Childcare and Education and is predicted to achieve a B grade overall.
“The next step for me is to look for a job within a nursery setting. I have a role lined up but until then I’m planning to get involved in as many work experience opportunities as possible,” added Michael.
