Course Overview

This qualification is taught over 1 year and is equivalent to 1 1/2 A levels, with a natural progression on to the 2nd year Extended Diploma, also equivalent to 1 and 1/2/ A levels.

This course has been designed to provide post-16 learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to further or higher education, training or employment in the creative industry or work in general. This qualification is designed for progression and to provide a substantial portfolio as an outcome of undertaking significant projects.

The course facilitates an analytical process that balances development of skills with personal growth and intentions. Its aim is to create independent learners while building Art and Design skills, understanding of materials, techniques and knowledge of the creative industry so you can make educated decisions on your future pathways.

  • Unit 1 is delivered over 3 – 4 projects of varying lengths, focusing on different areas in art and design exploring drawing, painting, printing, fashion drawing, textiles and 3D illustration. It explores the design cycle from inception of ideas to completion, such as understanding a brief or commission, researching, recording, responding and presentation.
  • Unit 2 is a creative project where students can research a specialist area in the creative industry. In this project you will need to demonstrate and evidence the knowledge and skills you have covered in unit 1 to produce a body of work. There is no exam – you are assessed on the work you produce.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

5 GCSEs at 4 or above with one of these being either Maths or English.

Applicants will be required to show examples of their work at an in-person interview.

Progression

This course will enable you to progress onto 2nd year level 3 Extended Diploma which is one-year and equivalent to 1 1/2 A levels, or other FE course of studies if under 19.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed throughout your course by completing project work, producing a portfolio of work, fully annotated sketchbooks and final projects.
