Course Info

This course consists of  working through a number of technical and practical units.

This is a practical and theory based course which consists of you working through a number of trade specific Carpentry & Joinery units as well as studying Maths and English if applicable.

The Carpentry & Joinery City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma will need you to complete specific units and topics. You will work towards the following units to make up the full qualification:

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
  • Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
  • Produce Woodworking Joints
  • Prepare and Use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools
  • Maintain and Use Carpentry and Joinery Power Tools

Each unit will include an externally set assessment to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the unit.

Teaching

Teaching is delivered in two distinct formats: workshop tuition supported by a workshop technician and technical lectures incorporating group work, self-directed study and IT.

If you have a Grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English, you will be in workshops and classes studying at a higher level to enhance your Maths and English skills. If you have a GCSE Grade D then you will study GCSE Maths and English with an expectation to achieve a Grade C or above.

If you have a lower grade, or no GCSE, you will study the most appropriate level of Functional Skills qualification.

On the 19+ programme you will work through a number of trade specific Carpentry & Joinery units only. Maths and English are not an integral part of your course.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

We want to make sure you are going to enrol on the right course so, to help us, we assess your ability and ask you to complete an aptitude assessment based on the Carpentry and Joinery industry. Through this assessment, we can also gauge your current level of Maths and English.

The main purpose of the assessment is to help us plan your development and support you in choosing the right level of study.

After the assessment, we will invite you in to speak to one of the tutors so that you have a chance to ask all the questions the you might have and to give you a clear plan of what you need to do.

After applying, you will be invited to attend an Admissions Event and tour our facilities and have all of your questions answered by one of our experts.
