Course Overview

Do you want to learn English? This course helps students from other countries to develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. We offer this course from Pre Entry level up to Level 1.

If you are 16-18 years old, English is your second language and you would like to progress your English, this is the course for you. You will learn how to speak, read and write everyday English and can start working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

This programme is the first step on the ladder to progressing into vocational learning, apprenticeships and employment. You will work with students from different countries. The classes will have different activities where you will work together in small groups, in pairs, or on your own.

Alongside English, you will also study:

  • Maths
  • IT
  • Citizenship – social and personal development
  • Enhance – employability skills (CV writing and interview practice)

You will also have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities including music, sports and work experience with internal and external employers.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

This course is for people who don’t speak English as a first language. You do not need to have any qualifications or to have learned English before. Please note that if you are an Asylum Seeker you must have been in the UK for at least 6 months before you can start the course.

You will be invited to an interview with an ESOL tutor who will discuss the courses available and you will do a small test to check your understanding. You will be offered a place at a suitable level. If you have completed ESOL courses at other colleges, you will need to bring your certificates.

Progression

Following successful completion of the course, you may be able to study in other areas of the college, including construction, healthcare or creative media.

Assessment Methods

Your teacher will discuss your progress with you every week. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your course and your tutor will set you targets.

You will be assessed differently for English and Maths. You will complete practice tests and the course is formally assessed by exam at all levels.
