Course Overview

Interested in becoming one of the next top game designers? The value of the UK video game market in 2023 was £7.82 billion, with 2,202 game companies based in the UK alone (UKIE, 2023).

Our full-time two-year course will provide you everything you need for a career in Games Design. You’ll learn how the industry designs games and develops narratives and brands. You will complete the course gaining a Level 3 Creative Media Practice qualification.  You’ll use industry-standard software to develop digital and creative production techniques including: 

  • Concept art & character design    
  • Level design 
  • 3D modelling and texturing 
  • 2D and 3D animation  
  • Game engines 
  • Programming  
  • App development  
  • Games platforms and technology  
  • Game narrative and storytelling  
  • Lighting and visual effects 
  • UI and HUDs 
  • Games Design Documenting 
  • Project management including Communication and Teamwork  

Take your steps into the gaming industry with Calderdale College. This course will offer you the opportunity to develop and expand your knowledge of gaming, games development and the game industry, preparing you for a career in the industry.  

Students will use a wide range of digital processes and experience taking their own novel ideas to concept art, to exciting 3D and 2D interactive games. 

Students will have the opportunity to showcase games to the public as well as industry professionals taking you to the next level.

Students will find their area of expertise and create a portfolio of work showing their skill in their chosen specialism.

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

An advanced course suitable for those with at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 to include English or a relevant Level 2 qualification such as BTEC First Diploma, GNVQ Intermediate, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent/relevant work experience. Applicants will be asked to show examples of their work at an interview.  

Progression

Successful completion of this course can lead to progression to further studies, progression to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and employment in the industry.
