Course Overview

This course includes specialist options in English/Maths and Inclusive Practice/Disabilities Teaching

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage qualification for those working or wishing to work as teachers of English (Literacy/ESOL), Maths, disabilities, subject specialism teaching or training in the Education and Training Sector.

In order to complete it you must have 30 hours of teaching, which can be in a paid or voluntary capacity.

It enables you to gain a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality and diversity, and meeting the needs of learners. It also addresses the use of assessment and the creation of inclusive learning resources.

The L4 Certificate consists of 5 mandatory units of study (21 credits), the first of which is also part of the Award in Education and Training. These are:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
  • Delivering education and training
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Using resources for education and training

You are required to achieve a minimum of 15 credits from further optional units of study. The four units (12 credits) that make up the L3 Award in English for Literacy/ESOL or the L3 Award in Maths Teaching are among these, making it possible to gain this qualification as part of your Certificate. Further options which may be available are:

  • Inclusive practice
  • Equality and diversity

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

You will need to demonstrate secure personal skills in English at Level 2 or above.

You are not required to complete the Award in Education and Training before taking this qualification however if you have done you will not need to complete the first unit of this qualification and there will be a consequent reduction in fees.

Progression

There is an option to APEL onto Year 2 of the Certificate in Education/PGCE at Calderdale College via a short ‘bridging’ award (University of Huddersfield).

You could also progress onto a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or a Specialist L5 Diploma in Teaching English: Literacy/ESOL, Maths: Numeracy or Disabled Learners.

Course Fee without Module 1 – 1,417.00

Student Loan available – 1,417.00

The Learner is required to pay the 203.00 (No Remission allowed) Top-Up Fee along with the Registration Fee (Bursary Available subject to Learner Circumstances)
