Course Overview

Always had that interest in cars? At Calderdale College, we offer a hands on course that allows you to discover this diverse industry.

This course is a great place to start for anyone wanting to pursue a career in motor vehicles.

You will learn the fundamentals of motor vehicle service and repair through working on real vehicles and engines. You will develop your ability to work with hand tools, powered tools as well as mechanical lifting equipment.

You will have the opportunity to further develop skills in mechanical and electrical fault finding to help in diagnosing problems so that you can work to solve them.

This course is intended for those wanting a practical, hands on learning experience that will lead to a nationally recognised qualification.

In addition to the main qualification you will also have opportunity to develop other skills and gain additional qualifications in MIG welding that will help broaden the range of career opportunities available to you.

In addition to learning the practical aspects of motor vehicles work and how to use the equipment you will be taught how to work safely and effectively.

In order to gain the Level 1 diploma you will need to complete theory and practical assessments in the units that make up your qualification. Highlights include:

  • Skills in Vehicle Fuel and Exhaust Systems
  • Skills in Vehicle Electrical Systems
  • Introduction to Automotive Technology and Workshop Skills
  • Skills in Motorcycle Internal Engine Systems
  • Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
  • Skills in Vehicle Hand Skills and Manufacturing Techniques

Entry Requirements & Interview Process

Applicants will need a Grade 3 or above in Math’s and English.

They will also need to attend Hello College, our summer taster day which is held end of June 2026.

At the start of your course we would expect you to complete an initial assessment to determine your current level of Math’s and English, this will help us to ensure that you are the right course at the right level for you. It also helps us to plan your programme and to make sure that the right support is in place for you.

Progression

Students can typically progress to a higher level of learning such as a Level 2 Certificate or Diploma and/or apprenticeships and employment.
