Task 2

Complete a mind map for the following essay title: Discuss the factors that contribute to student success at university.

Task 3

You’ve found a useful article for your essay – which of the following is the correct way to reference it?

  1. Those students who succeed at university often demonstrate excellent time management skills (Shepperd, 2002).
  2. Those students who succeed at university often demonstrate excellent time management skills (Rhonda Shepperd, 2002).
  3. Those students who succeed at university often demonstrate excellent time management skills (Shepperd, R., 2002).

Task 4

What’s the best way of structuring these three points into a paragraph, using the PEE model?

Confidence in their own abilities can give students a better chance of being able to manage the requirements of the course (Burton and Dowling, 2005). In addition to this, those who have higher levels of self-belief are more likely to persevere when faced with difficult tasks (Linnenbrink and Pintrich, 2002).

This demonstrates that, whilst it does not guarantee academic success, self-belief can help students overcome some of the obstacles that they may face during the course. Therefore, it could be beneficial to develop this confidence in order to achieve more from their degree.

One aspect that can lead to student success is self-belief.

Task 5

You’ve completed your essay and need to proofread. Check the following paragraph and correct any errors.

As well has internal motivation, students may also be influenced by external motivation. External factors that can motivate students include good marks, praise from a tutor or the prospect of a job at the end of the course. It’s been argued that external motivation is not as effective as internal motivation (Deci et al., 1999). Students’ who are motivated solely by their results may be disheartened if they don’t achieve there target grade, which could discourage them in future. Meanwhile, those with strong internal motivation who are focust on personal improvement are likely to be satisfied with a below target grade if they show signs of development. this suggests that relying only on external motivating factors may hinder student success.
